The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has strongly denied a recent report by Reuters, calling it "fabricated."
The report was about the clashes at the Chittagong court premises on Tuesday, following the bail hearing of Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson for the United Sanatan Awakening Coalition.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 27, through the chief advisor’s press wing, the CMP said, “Reporting statements that were never given by any officer and presenting them as facts goes against the principles of journalism.”
The CMP further expressed hope that "Reuters and other media outlets will act more responsibly when publishing such news in the future."
The Reuters article, which was later republished by outlets like Voice of America, quoted an individual identified as “Deputy Police Commissioner of the Southern Division, Liakat Ali Khan,” who reportedly said, “A Muslim lawyer supporting Chinmoy Das was killed during the protest outside the court.”
The CMP clarified that “no Reuters journalist, or any other journalist, spoke with Deputy Police Commissioner (South) Liakat Ali Khan.”
They added, “During the incident, he was busy maintaining law and order at the court and surrounding areas, and he did not give any statement.”
The CMP also mentioned that there are four constables named Liakat in Chittagong, none of whom provided any comments on the matter.
